There is an almost mythical green sand beach along the
southern tip of the island. Going there can feel as though you
are travelling to the end of the world. The three-hour drive
takes you through the wind swept hills of South Point. At roads
end, the small strip of emerald sand is only accessible by
four-wheel drive car or by a six-mile walk. For those that make
the walk, the reward is worth the effort; an absolutely remote
beach made of the rarest of sands.
To get to Ka Lae, take the narrow but paved road off Highway
11, about 6 miles west of Na'alehu town. Head directly south
for 12 miles to the ocean. You will pass the Kamoa Wind Farm
along the way. When you reach land's end, take the left fork.
Continue along this road until you reach another parking lot
and a boat ramp. This is where the path to the beach begins.
