We always tray and go into town during the Kona Farmer's
Market. Vendors from all over the island sell unique varieties
of fresh vegetables, fruits, cakes, sweets, coffee, crafts,
and antiques. Be sure to try the local versions of the fruits -
the sweet Kona oranges, the delicate yet buttery Puna papayas,
and the refreshingly different Apple Bananas. At the flower
stand, we pick up lush Orchids (for five dollars!), vibrant
Anthuriums, and fragrant Plumeria's for the house. After we
have covered the basics, we leave time to search for a bargain
teak bowls and black pearls.
The Kailua Village Farmers Market, at the corner of Alii
Drive and Hualalai Road, is open Wednesday, Friday, Saturday
and Sunday. Kona Farmers Market, located in the old industrial
area, is open Saturday and Sunday. Most of the markets are cash
only. Extra bags are advisable.
