Closer to home, the Old Airport beach in Kona has wonderful
snorkeling. While not the most scenic beach on the island, it
makes up for it with the thousands of crustaceans, sea stars,
and fish hanging out in the tide-pools. The snorkeling among
the lava flows is a rewarding experience. If you decide to
snorkel along the coastline, please pay attention to the
current, which can be surprisingly strong.
A couple things to remember. Sun block only lasts about
forty-five minutes in the water, and we usually forget and
stay out for about three hours. Over that time, our backs will
be directly exposed to the sun. Come in and re-apply sun block
every forty five minutes. If you still get burned, pick up
some aloe from the store, drink lots of water, and take some
Advil as soon as you can.
